The Different Kinds of Acne

There’s no doubt about it: Having acne is crummy. It affects your appearance and can interfere with your self-confidence as well.

Acne is frustratingly common, affecting as many as 50 million Americans each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. And it doesn’t just occur in teens: Many adults, including as many as 15% of women, have acne.

These are sobering statistics. But just because acne is common doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. At Advanced Practice Medical Aesthetics, certified family nurse practitioner Patty Stewart offers her patients a variety of safe, effective acne treatments.

The first step toward clearing up acne is understanding what type of acne you have. Here, you can learn about the different kinds of acne that could be affecting your skin.

Unsightly blemishes

Acne causes pimples, bumps, and other types of blemishes on your face, neck, back, chest, or shoulders. It develops within hair follicles in your skin when they become blocked with oil or dead skin cells. The main types of acne include:

These are pimples that appear dark in color. They’re typically located close to your skin’s surface.

This type of pimple has a tendency to cause permanent scarring because of its location deep within your skin. Cysts are often painful and are usually filled with pus. Cystic acne is considered the most serious type of acne.

This type of pimple tends to be big, solid, and sometimes painful. Not surprisingly, nodules are usually located deep within your skin.

Papules are pimple-like bumps that may feel sore or tender. Although they’re usually pink, they can also be white, red, or brown. They sometimes appear in groups.

Like cysts, pustules contain pus, but they’re likely to appear reddish beneath the pus. They look like bulging bumps on your skin.

Because these blemishes are found deeper within your skin, they have a whitish appearance.
